About The Watch Hill Chapel
|
|
As it has for more than a century, the Chapel remains central to the life of Watch Hill and the surrounding communities and a cherished part of the lives of those who worship here. Its non-sectarian spirit and purpose give the Chapel a special quality and may well make it unique among religious institutions in this country.
Today, there are two regular Sunday services, during a season which begins in late June and ends in mid-September. Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated at 8:30 a.m., under the direction of the Parish of Saint Clare, Misquamicut, RI.
The non-denominational Protestant service is held at 10:00 a.m. and is conducted by a variety of prominent clergy who are invited to preach and who come from many parts of the country and abroad. All 10:00 a.m. services begin with the singing of the hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy”. The Doxology is sung at the Offertory, followed by the last stanza of the anthem, "America". A Communion service is held at 10:00 a.m. on two Sundays each summer, one in July and one in August. At the closing service of the season a special “Closing Prayer” is said, and the congregation sings the hymn, "‘Til We Meet".
A Community Hymn Sing takes place on one Sunday afternoon in each of July and August.
There is also an Ecumenical Service Thanksgiving morning at 10:00 a.m. The plate offerings go directly to charities in the Westerly-Pawcatuck area, which serve the needy and homeless.

The spirit of the Chapel is well expressed in the mottoes inscribed on its walls. These mottoes were suggested by the Honorable James Leland Howard, a founder of the Chapel, and its President from 1889 to 1906.
“The Church is Many as the Waves, but One, as the Sea.”
“In Essentials, Unity: in Non-Essentials, Liberty: in All Things, Charity.”
The second motto is attributed to a Lutheran priest, Petrus Meiderlinus (1592-1651), and reads: “In necessariis unitas, in non-necessariis libertas, in utrisque caritas.”
